Helping Community, One Soul At A Time

Viola's Huge Heart Foundation is a San Antonio-based organization established by the Barrios family in 2008 in memory of their mother, restaurateur Viola Barrios, the founder of Los Barrios Mexican Restaurant and La Hacienda de Los Barrios. The foundation is a not-for-profit organization eligible under Internal Revenue Section 501(c)(3) to accept tax-deductible donations. Viola's three adult children, Louis Barrios, Dr. Teresa Barrios Ogden, DPM, and Diana Barrios-Trevino make up the foundation's board of directors. They serve strictly as volunteers in all of the activities of the Foundation.

Viola's Huge Heart Foundation's mission is to improve the lives of good, hard-working individuals—especially women—who face insurmountable obstacles in life, by providing hope through educational scholarships and charitable assistance. The Foundation endeavors to help individuals and families in the places Viola Barrios loved most: San Antonio, Texas and her hometown, Bustamante, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

The Foundation's goal and reason for being is to help individuals who have demonstrated that they are guided by self-responsibility and self-improvement. "Our purpose is to help people who want to help themselves to achieve self-reliance. It is like the mission my mom had," said Viola's son Louis, president of the foundation. "Some people would ask for a handout, but my mother was more into helping people who were trying to help themselves to improve their lives." The Foundation is in its fouth year of operation. It has taken the first step in its long-term commitment to endeavor to enrich community by providing opportunities for educational attainment by young citizens, one individual at a time. Ultimately, the Foundation's goal is to broaden community support to grow and sustain funding programs that help dedicated young people early in their lives, giving them the opportunity to build a strong educational foundation that puts them on a path to achieve their full potential as individuals and as productive and contributing members of society.
